New Variable Speed Cable Gives Improved Flexibility
A redesigned range of 3 phase cable for variable speed drives has been released by General Cable,
in a move to improve flexibility and ease of handling during termination.
The key improvement in the new KleenScreen™ range is the replacement of class 2
fine wires with class 5 wires for the conductors of all VSD cables from size 16mm and above.
General Cable’s KleenScreen™ Variable Speed 3 Phase cable is specifically designed to supply
motors for variable speed controls mounted on trays or in underground ducts where they are not
subject to mechanical damage. KleenScreen™ is designed to significantly reduce radiated interference
from electrical noise by using symmetrical, balanced and screened construction.
William Hamilton, General Cable Industrial Business Unit manager, says with so many industrial processes
relying on motors with variable speed drives, achieving consistency in terminations is critical to overall business performance.
The decision to re-specify the VSD range arose from General Cable’s involvement in the construction of a major new timber
processing plant in Northland. During the installation of more than 4900kW of motors in a new TDC Sawmills plant,
General Cable worked closely with on site electricians to observe the termination procedures and to provide support
on the use of G Packs, General Cable’s unique VSD gland packs.
This process highlighted the difficulties in achieving an effective termination in confined spaces.
After consulting with the General Cable technical team, a decision was made to replace the class 2 wires
with a conductor offering increased flexibility.
“By working with the client closely on site, we were able to provide a high level of support and look
for ways to add value not only to the project but to the features of the product range,” says Hamilton.
“Our approach is always about adding value and working with the client, and this is an excellent example of
how that process can have long term benefits for the industry.”
“When you consider that the down time for a timber mill can be in the region of $1000 a minute,
it’s essential that we assess and reassess what we’re offering to clients and always look for a better way.”
“The redesign process has ensured that complex electrically-driven plants, such as wood processing,
manufacturing and food processing, can specify an upgraded VSD cable designed for maximum reliability,
good handling characteristics and excellent overall performance.”
The new KleenScreen™ range is now available through wholesalers nationwide.
