Download GenCALC - Cable Sizing Software

GenCALC is to assist electricians and designers select the most appropriate sized cable to safely carry the required load and still comply with the volt drop requirements as specified in the Wiring Rules (NZS 3000).

The program requires the user to specify the current, load arrangement (single or 3 phase, balanced or unbalanced), the installation condition (eg: buried direct), the type of cable required (single core, multicore or neutral screen) and the allowable volt drop. The program then lists cables from General Cable stock that will comply with the stated conditions.

Other menus on the program allow limits on existing circuits to be quickly checked. For example, an existing installation now requires an increase in load of 20%. Will that overload the cable? Will volt drop be a problem? Also available is a quick calculator to convert motor ratings (kW or hp) to a line current.

Note that the program is designed to compliment the Standard AS/NZS 3008.1.2:1998, which is an essential document for all involved in designing electrical installations. This standard is available from Standards New Zealand on-line at www.standards.co.nz or Phone 0800 735 656.
